5 Simple Tools so you can Ace Architectural Models
Some of these items may seem pretty obvious however some people don’t use them to their best ability…
I’m just going to give you a really quick run down of the key tools I use for creating architectural models with nearly any standard material. Usually I would opt for a foam-board or card base material as they are reasonably cheap and easiest to manipulate.
Here’s what I learnt from creating what felt like a million models over 3 years…
ONLY use a technical pencil. No tradition pencils, no pens. You need accuracy for architectural models otherwise you will, and I mean 100% WILL go insane the 18th time you have to re-do the same piece of wall because it is slightly out.
The next thing you need is a metal ruler. Now you can also use a set square to get absolutely perfect right angles (it does come in useful) but if you’re not up for investing in a lot of things then a metal ruler is the way to go.
The reason for this is that not only can it be used to mark out the size and shape of the pieces for the model but also so you can use it to cut along. Standard plastic rulers will easily get damaged when you being cutting whereas you’ll probably have your metal ruler forever!
Now this sounds scary.. and this tool should not be taken lightly. It is literally a knife that is used to cut open peoples bodies. But - if used in the correct way then its very safe and a lot easier than any other options out there.
Make sure you change your blade often! You won’t realise it until you replace it but it is seriously reducing your productivity and accuracy if you continue to use a worn out blade.
TIP: I found that after a while, using a pure metal scalpel like this can take its toll on your fingers. Take some Blu-Tack and mould it around the handle to fit how I preferred to hold it. This takes a lot of strain out of your hand and hopefully means you can get the task completed quicker.
A saviour. I’m going to say it again - you are using a surgical scalpel! Please invest in a cutting mat before your uni, landlord or parents start screaming because you’ve ruined all the surfaces!
Again, I’m all about the things that will last.. Get a ‘self-healing’ cutting mat! It is technically made up of tiny bits of material to create a solid surface. Therefore your scalpel moves between these tiny pieces and once removed they move back together. It just means your mat will last longer in general.
5.UHU Glue
All purpose adhesive - it’s a little bit messy but its great for model making. It is clear and you only need a little.
Now it takes a couple of seconds to dry so you do need to hold pieces in place for a few seconds - however this short amount of time does allow you to adjust positioning where needed.
